NHS brides gifted FREE gowns by couture dressmaker during Coronavirus crisis

A dressmaker is gifting complementary bridal gowns to workers on the frontline during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Holly Winter had initially thought of putting her sewing credentials to use by making face masks for the public.

However, having no knowledge of the antiviral properties of different fabrics, she was concerned that she may become more of a hindrance than a help.

Instead, she is offering her talents to NHS staff who have had to postpone their weddings.

Speaking to Uspire, Holly said: “I’ve been overwhelmed by the response. My first taker works in an ICU near me and is getting married in July next year.

“I realised that there must be NHS staff in this situation, and I could maybe help to alleviate a little stress by designing and making a bespoke wedding dress.

“I’d like to help as many as I can but can’t guarantee I’ll be able to do this for everyone as I’ve no idea how much interest the offer will garner.”

She continued: “I’m doing video consultations to discuss design ideas and I can then take measurements by talking brides through the process. Then I can start stitching.

“I’m also offering all brides the option of borrowing sample dresses free of charge that I’ve spent the last two years creating.”

The owner of Holly Winter Couture will see a hefty blow to her business this year, though she says she is fortunate that it can weather the storm.

Holly explained: “I just want to do something to make me feel like a useful human in a crisis.

“The wedding community is a lovely bunch of talented and caring people and I’ve seen so many suppliers pulling out all the stops to help couples who are having to postpone.

“Cake maker Anna Lewis is baking boxes of stunning cupcakes and delivering them to her local NHS staff. Photographer Berni Palumbo is offering free online photography courses for beginners. Stationer Flutterbeeze is offering free date change designs. Heard In London Photography is offering her services free to my NHS brides and Bish Bosh Becca will provide hand-made necklace and earring sets.”

Holly fell into dressmaking accidentally after quitting her career in PR to be a stay-at-home mum, after posting photos of her handmade clothes online only to find she was inundated with commissions from around the world.
